Teeny Tiny City 5 – Handmade found object brooch

This is the fifth and most recent in my Teeny Tiny City series. The maximum number of brooches I make in any series is limited to 12, and although they all have a theme in common, they are all different. In this case, the unusual aspect is that all the buildings in this ‘city’ are made from screws without heads – and no, I didn’t cut them; I found them all that way!

I created this miniature cityscape brooch on a small grey blue tile with a ‘river’ of rusted wire, ‘buildings’ of screws without heads, and a round metal ‘sun’. All of these bits and bobs I found on the streets of Melbourne. I normally create larger wall sculptures and 3D sculptures from the wood, metal, tiles and plastic I find, but I also like to ‘think small’.

Through Instagram I had met handmade jewellery designer Lynn Powers from New Orleans. She regularly encouraged me to try something ‘jewellery sized’, but I never had. Then I saw that the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria was holding its annual Australian National Brooch Show.

I hunted through my collection of trash looking for smooth backing pieces and tiny pieces of metal. I bought a packet of brooch clips, then started experimenting.

Making brooches is great fun. My pieces have been on display at several of the Australian National Brooch Shows. They are currently available from Far Fetched Designs in Seddon, Artocracy in Brunswick and the Louis Joel Gallery shop in Altona.
