Remember White Night 2 – Miniature cityscape wall sculpture

Sold

Do you remember White Night in Melbourne? This event was held for one night in February from 2013 to 2018. Over 700,000 people attended in the last year. It was a wonderful opportunity to see our public buildings lit up spectacularly from dusk to dawn. Sadly, they are a thing of the past. However, this is my commemoration of what once was a marvellous Melbourne occasion.

I created this miniature cityscape wall sculpture, Remember White Night 2, to commemorate Melbourne’s White Night. I made it using a black painted board, a white rectangular tile made in Spain, and many gold-coloured pieces of metal and plastic. These include a chain ‘river’, flat rectangular ‘buildings’, stars and a washer ‘moon’. I found all the bits and pieces on the streets of Melbourne during my daily walks.

My name is Nancy D Lane. I am a found object assemblage artist and jewellery designer, working under the name NancyDee Sculptures. I create wall sculptures, 3D sculptures and brooches from the metal, wood, tiles and plastic that I pick up off the streets. My art is inspired by a strong interest in sustainability through repurposing and upcycling.

My inspiration

Many of my works are inspired by the Melbourne skyline, especially at sunrise and sunset. Often I try to incorporate ‘natural features’. This might be a bent nail that suggests a meandering river, rusted sheet metal that transforms into a cloud, or a broken tile that becomes a mountain.

My more abstract works are stimulated by the found objects themselves, which I often place in juxtaposition. At other times, I emphasise their rusted, scratched or variegated surfaces.

My hope is that my works make you smile. At the same time, may they remind you of the 5Rs to help our planet: refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle.
