Brumby 1 – Handmade Brooch Turned Magnet

Ride a wild horse – not on your lapel, but on your fridge!

Brumby 1 was created by NancyDee as a unique handmade brooch from metal and stone that she found on Melbourne’s streets and beaches. However, the potential purchaser asked whether Nancy could convert it to a magnet, which she did, and then it galloped – or rather, winged – its way to the United States.

Recently I had a chance to think small – in particular, brooch sized. I normally create larger wall sculptures and 3D sculptures from the wood, metal and tiles I find on the streets of Melbourne.

Through Instagram I had met handmade jewellery designer Lynn Powers from New Orleans. She regularly encouraged me to try making jewellery from the found objects I collected, but I never had.

Then I saw that the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria was holding its annual Australian National Brooch Show.

I hunted through my collections of natural objects and street trash looking for smooth backing pieces and tiny pieces of metal. I bought a packet of brooch clips, then started experimenting.

Making brooches is great fun. Five of my pieces were on display in the 2019 Australian National Brooch Show. Several others have sold at Incube8r Gallery in Prahran and the River Studios Christmas Market. Now they are available through my online shop as well.
