Works in Drawers

I have collected wooden desk and bureau drawers from the streets to create works in drawers. They were featured in an exhibition In the Drawer: The Silver Lining at the Melbourne City Library gallery from 15 December 2021-9 March 2022.

To me, these drawers represented the isolation we all faced during Covid lockdown. However, there was also an upside – an immense resilience and creativity – as people engaged in imaginative family activities, exercised in unusual and creative ways, developed productive hobbies, and engaged in stimulating pursuits, all within severe public health restrictions. Despite the cloud of COVID-19, many people created their own silver linings.

I also had an exhibition Zero Waste: Doing It Imperfectly at the Belconnen Regional Gallery in Canberra from 13 October-26 November 2023.

In this exhibition, the drawers symbolised global, systemic ‘boxed in’ thinking, a business-as-usual mind frame regardless of intensifying environmental crises. Nonetheless, I’ve found that many people are increasingly committed to doing something – however imperfectly and each in their own way – to help mitigate climate change, which is what the images in these drawers represent.
