Sustainability and the 5 Rs
I have a strong interest in environmental conservation and am committed to sustainability in my art. Creating art using only the materials others have lost or discarded is a continuing and exciting challenge.
My hope is that my creative use of unloved and unwanted trash will inspire people to think more seriously about the environment. I would like my works to remind everyone of the 5 Rs: refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle.
Support for charities
However, I do have to purchase builders’ adhesive to glue my works and pins for my brooches. I try to make up for this by donating part of my sales to not-for-profit organisations in Laos each year. I have volunteered there for many years, and continue to do so remotely during the Covid pandemic.
In 2017 I supported the Lao Friends Children’s Hospital, and in 2018, the Music for Everyone School. Both are located in Luang Prabang, Laos. In 2019 I held an art benefit for the Cultural Studies Series to sponsor the publication of a Lao book called The Pen Reflects My Life, written by and for Lao young adults. In 2020 I donated my November sales income from Incube8r Gallery to a resilience project for Lao young people, sponsored by @ My Library in Luang Prabang. In 2021, I sponsored a friend who was running here in Australia, but in support, via Internet, of the Lao Friends Children’s Hospital through the sale of one of my 3D cityscapes at CoLab Arts in the Park.
Fundraising opportunities for your group
I also support fundraising for Australian not-for-profit environmental and community development organisations. My works are available to these groups wholesale or on consignment.
Options for group fundraising activities include raffles, silent auctions, art from trash workshops, and pop-up art exhibitions and sales. I am happy to advise and assist with these. I also enjoy giving talks about my art at meetings and special events to support fundraising activities.
